You know what I think of friends setting dates for you? Rubbish! They get you into more trouble than it is worth. I am single and I hate these blind dates, imagine married people doing the whole I-don’t-know-you façade. That’s just hopeless!
So a good and concerned friend hooked me up with one of his friends. I always feel that good intentions are the undoing of most people, but nobody asks me. So we were to meet at a pub just round the corner from my workplace. This place was famous for its beer pong tables. They were reputedly huge and the right width for a good game. I told myself, if the date is too awkward, I’ll just amuse myself at the beer pong tables.
I was a bit early as was my habit. We had agreed to meet by the jukebox. We did not do the usual I-will-wear-this routine. That was just so high school. The jukebox was right next to the beer pong tables. Great choice of location, I thought. I have been known to look through people I don’t find interesting.
I was looking at the recent changes at the jukebox when I heard a female name call out my name. I turned around. Every nightmare you ever had about blind dates had just come true. There standing looking equally amazed was my ex-girlfriend from college!
Only the tock tock sound from the adjacent beer pong tables was audible. I mumbled a weak hello. She, Nelly, gathered herself more quickly. She smiled and then chuckled.
‘What were the chances of this happening?’ she asked me.
‘Very very slim’ I replied. We both looked at the beer pong tables in silence.
My mind went back to those years we were together. We were pretty steady then. I remember being quite the lover boy for her. I smiled to myself. Different choices in life eventually drove us apart, but it was neither bitter nor ugly. We moved away after college, and had never been in touch.
We caught up with each others lives. We laughed together when the guys at the beer pong tables did something stupid. She hadn’t been married, like me. We had been in long term relationships though. And as is natural with people who have been in school or college with you and whom you meet after a long time, we reminisced about old times.
We tried a game at the beer pong tables. She remembered how I used to hate the smell of beer but loved the taste. I reminded her of every smell seemed like roses to her at one point. It was so nice meeting somebody who knew me then. It was like meeting myself when I was five years younger.
We exchanged numbers and promised to meet whenever we could. It was good night, I had to admit. It didn’t turn out as badly as I had thought. The date was good, the pub was great, and the game at the beer pong tables was amazing.
