In the dark

dark beer pong table

The lights were out that night in the entire neighborhood. My husband, Brad, and two children were stuck at home. Jason, my elder one, was to go to the neighbors’ place for a movie. Now there was no sense to go next door if he was just going to sit in the dark there too. My daughter, Jewel, was braiding and re-braiding her hair.

‘Do you know what beer pong tables are?’ Brad suddenly said.

I gave him a warning look. Now Brad loved a good story. He was really a camping-outdoorsy kind of person. The other thing he loved more than listening to stories was telling them. His favorite kinds were tales from his college days. They were not always appropriate for family consumption, though.

Brad continued anyway. ‘These tables I am talking about, these beer pong tables, were really special. We judged a person by the kind of beer pong tables they had.’

Jason was interested. ‘What did you do with these beer pong tables?’

‘Well..’ I interjected. Beer stories were only going to give Jason and Jewel ideas. ‘These tables…’ I mumbled but then, no bright ideas on my side.

‘You guys want to see?’

‘Brad!’

‘Trust me’

In the light of candles, he pulled our two oak tables to the center of the room. Jason was quick to help. Brad asked Jewel to get some plastic glasses. He asked Jason for some chalk. He turned to me.

‘Well don’t just stand there, get the soda.’

‘Soda?’

‘Hurry up now dear.’

I got a large bottle of soda that was in the fridge. It was unopened. I placed it on the table. ‘So here are our beer pong tables’ he gestured towards them.

He placed the glasses on our improvised beer pong tables. He filled them and placed them on either side. ‘Now Jewel, I’ve got the ping pong balls that we play with so often.’

He stood on one end, and poised. ‘Now the rules of the game are these: there is only one rule.’

He threw the ball towards the glass, and it landed in almost perfectly, splashing a bit on the table. ‘You must throw the ball in the glass. If you can throw it, you can drink it.’ He threw another ball again, this time it hit one of the beer pong tables. ‘All of us guys and sometimes our girls collected in whoever’s room where we could find a decent table, and started a game. Whoever lost, meaning, could not land the ball in the glass, had to pay for the drinks.’

‘I want to try!’ both of the kids said in unison. Brad and Jewel teamed at one end and Jason and I at one end of the beer pong tables.

We spent the next hour and a half playing Brad’s version of beer pong. Jason forgot about the cancelled movie with his pal and Jewel finally let go of her hair. After that night, whenever opportunity presented itself, we all got together and played a game on the beer pong tables.
